Vacaville Unified School District Governing Board

Overview

The Vacaville Unified School District Governing Board consists of seven members. School Board elections are held on even-numbered years, with members elected to serve staggered four-year terms.

Basic functions of the Board are to establish the policies by which the schools of the District are to be administered and to select the Superintendent and staff who will implement those policies. The Board shall be responsible for the organization and operation of the District in conformity with the rules and regulations of the State Board of Education, and the laws of the State and Federal Government.

Board Meetings

Board meetings will be held at the VUSD Educational Services Center, located at 401 Nut Tree Drive, and are generally held the first and third Thursday of each month. During the months of January, February, July, and December there is only one meeting due to school breaks/holidays. Also, during the month of June the meetings will be held on the second and fourth Thursdays. Special meetings are called as needed. Please call the Superintendent's Office at 453-6101 to verify meeting dates, times and locations.

Closed Session Report Out

President Jansen reported that the Board approved the appointment of La Tonya Cruthird as Cooper Elementary School Principal. Congratulations La Tonya!

 

Superintendent’s Comments/Correspondence

  • Superintendent Shamieh introduced newly-appointed administrators Ana Farina, Jepson Middle School Principal; Melissa Mainini, Vaca Pena Middle School Dean of Learning Support; and Aaron Toliver, Vacaville High School Assistant Principal.
  • Budget Update: Interim Assistant Superintendent of Business and Administrative Services Kelly Burks provided information on the Governor's May Revision state budget update.
  • High School Graduation Plans Update: Communications Director Elaine Kong and Director of Secondary Education Kelley Birch, along with high school student representatives, provided information on proposed high school graduation plans.

Staff Reports and Presentations

  • Distance Learning Update: Educational Services Directors Kelley Birch and Ryan Galles, along with School Principals Greg Moffitt, Cathy Bozzini, Colleen Moe, and Adam Rich, provided an update on the successes and challenges of the District’s distance learning program.
  • Foster and Homeless Youth Program Update: Community Liaison and Safety Coordinator Rae Ann Quinata provided information on the objectives, services, and outreach efforts of the District’s Foster and Homeless Youth Program.
  • Status of High School Grading: Associate Superintendent Ed Santopadre provided information on how District grading practices have been implemented in the District’s distance learning program.
  • Facilities Update: Chief Facilities, Maintenance & Operations Officer Dan Banowetz provided an update on current construction projects.

Action Items – the following items were approved by the Board:

  1. Adoption of Resolution No. 27, 2019-20, Recognizing California Day of the Teacher, May 13, 2020.
  2. Adoption of Resolution No. 28, 2019-20, Recognizing National School Nurse Day, May 13, 2020.
  3. Adoption of Resolution No. 29, 2019-20, Recognizing Classified School Employee Week, May 17-23, 2020.
  4. Adoption of Resolution No. 30, 2019-20, Authorizing Addendum #5 of the Facilities Lease with Landmark Modernization.
  5. Adoption of Resolution No. 31, 2019-20, Approving Purchase Agreement and Final Acceptance of Real Property.
  6. Approval of Purchase and Sale Agreement for Property Located at 621 South Orchard Avenue, Vacaville, CA 95688.
  7. Approval of Charter Revisions for Kimme Charter Academy for Independent Learning.
  8. Approval of Buckingham Charter Magnet High School Name Change to “Buckingham Collegiate Charter Academy”.
  9. Approval of One-time Off Schedule Compensation for Unrepresented Employee Groups.
  10. Approval of Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators.
  11. Approval of Contract with Aurora Environmental Services, Inc. for Environmental Consulting, Hazardous Waste Management, and Industrial Hygiene Services.
